Selections from Moulin Rouge are a newly popular music choice in the world of skating. Until now, it hasn't been the most practical choice for most skaters, as it is not largely instrumental and so was off limits to everyone except the ice dancers until this season.
To be fair, I'm not really a fan of Moulin Rouge in the first place, so the number of Moulin Rouge programs in the 2014-2015 season wasn't something I looked forward to.
However, some of the selections are fine for skating, and though they don't fit into my music preferences, some of the choices do still make sense to me. However, the number of people who skated to the music of Moulin Rouge this season makes it a bad choice going forward, if only for the sake of originality.
The worst selection that was used this season was, unfortunately, used widely, across multiple disciplines. The Tango Roxanne isn't a terrible piece of music in and of itself, but it doesn't work for skating, especially as a short program.
The crescendos in Tango Roxanne come at the end of the program, the music builds in intensity towards the end, and does so dramatically. This doesn't work well for the end of a program as it only intensifies the signs of exhaustion many skaters display near the end of a program. The last thing a skater wants to do is emphasize their weaknesses, but skating to Tango Roxanne at the end of a program does only that.
As I said before, I'm not a huge fan of the music in the first place, and listening to it all season has only intensified my distaste for the music. One of my least favourite pieces of music from Moulin Rouge is Tango Roxanne, so naturally, that was the most popular choice of music from Moulin Rouge this season.
We can expect the reign of Moulin Rouge to continue, as we know for sure at least Ashley Wagner will be skating to it next season. (I'm not really sure how I feel about that, especially because this will be essentially her fourth season with basically the same choreography, assuming she doesn't really change her program, but I don't actually hate the program, it did, amazingly, grow on me this season).
Let's take a look at some of the other Moulin Rouge Programs we've seen.
Liam Firus FS (2014-2015)
Daisuke Murakami SP (2014-2015)
Tarah Kayne and Danny O'Shea SP (2014-2015)
Alexa Scimeca and Chris Knierim SP (2014-2015)
Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morosov SP (2013-2014)
And of course there were more, these are only a few of the most recognizable Moulin Rouge programs.
