The entire first flight of the men's FS at worlds was brutal. 3 phantom programs in one flight, and being the first, naturally, they were not the best programs of the event. This is why it's important for coaches and choreographers and skaters to pay attention to what others are skating to. It's difficult to stand out when most of the flight is skating to the same music.
The other flights in the men's FS were better than the first for the number of Phantom programs, but there were still way too many.
And this was only one portion of one event this season. Despite the fact that I love Phantom of the Opera (or did, until now) I cringe every time I see that someone is skating to it. I can only imagine what people who never like Phantom must be thinking by now.
This year's Phantom programs included:
Kanako Murakami's Short and Free:
Yuzuru Hanyu's Free:
Takahito Mura's Free:
June Hyoung Lee's Free:
Michael Christian Martinez's Free:
Ronald Lam's Free:
Gracie Gold's Free:
Never mind the Phantom programs of years past.
Davis and White:
Patrick Chan:
Akiko Suzuki:
Nicole Della Monica and Matteo Guarise:
Elene Gedevanishvili:
Just to name a few from the past few years. Of course there are many more I didn't include.
The problem is not the music itself, but the fact that there was an overwhelming number of them this year. I'm a fan of the show, but at this point, I don't think I'll be watching or listening to it any time soon.
Here's Hoping we get a year off from Phantom. Seriously skaters, so yourself a favour and just don't skate to it this season.
What are your favourite and least favourite Phantom programs? Let me know!
